What experience does Minal have?

Minal Desai has over 25 years of experience as a physiotherapist, having qualified in 1997. Since 2008 she has specialised in shoulder rehabilitation, and was part of the team at the prestigious Reading Shoulder Unit — one of the UK’s leading centres for shoulder care.

Over her career she has built a trusted reputation for a caring, patient-focused and results-driven approach, helping people recover from pain, injury and surgery. She maintains close working relationships with local shoulder surgeons, notably alongside Giuseppe Sforza, and has presented at the Reading Shoulder International Conferences.

This combination of long clinical experience and ongoing involvement in specialist shoulder and upper limb practice means her patients benefit from genuine depth of expertise as well as the latest research and techniques.

Minal offers expert physiotherapy and hand therapy for the upper limb – shoulder, elbow, arm, hand and wrist. Her treatment is holistic and personalised, combining traditional physiotherapy with additional techniques such as acupuncture to support faster, more effective recovery. Her main areas of treatment include:

  • Shoulder care – shoulder pain and impingement, frozen shoulder, instability or weakness, rotator cuff injuries and tears, and post-operative rehabilitation after surgery such as rotator cuff repair or shoulder replacement.
  • Elbow physiotherapy – tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, post-injury and post-surgical rehabilitation, and joint stiffness, weakness and mobility issues.
  • Hand and wrist therapy – recovery after hand or wrist fractures, rehabilitation following surgery (such as carpal tunnel release or tendon and ligament repair), common conditions including arthritis, tendonitis and De Quervain’s, and sports or overuse injuries such as repetitive strain.

Every patient receives a detailed assessment and a tailored treatment plan designed to restore strength, mobility and confidence in the affected area.

Minal is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the UK’s statutory regulator for physiotherapists – her registration number is PH63928, which can be verified on the HCPC register.

She is also a certified Hand Therapist with the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT), the recognised professional body for accredited hand therapy in the UK. In addition, she is an active member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), keeping her practice aligned with the latest research and best practice in upper limb rehabilitation.

Minal finished her Bachelors in Physiotherapy in India in 1997, and then did her Masters modules in Keele university. She holds a qualification  in Hand therapy from the British Association of Hand therapists (BAHT) foundation level done in 2008 and subsequently has done two Level 2 certification courses
She has also trained in Acupuncture and is registered with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.

Minal is a Shoulder Specialist and certified Hand Therapist, with the upper limb as her clear area of expertise. Shoulder rehabilitation has been her primary specialism since 2008, spanning everything from common complaints like impingement and frozen shoulder to complex rotator cuff injuries and post-surgical recovery.

As a BAHT-certified Hand Therapist, she also offers specialist hand and wrist care, and she treats a full range of elbow conditions. Her active involvement with BESS, her presentations at the Reading Shoulder International Conferences, and her ongoing relationships with local shoulder surgeons all reinforce a focused specialism: helping patients with shoulder, elbow, arm and hand problems move better, feel stronger and recover with confidence.

Minal is registered with BUPA, Aviva, Vitality Health, WPA and Healix, and can treat patients covered by these providers directly. For all other insurers, she is happy to provide invoices that you can submit to your provider to claim back.

Insurance cover can vary significantly between policies, so we strongly recommend checking with your insurer before booking to confirm that your treatment with Minal is covered. In some cases you may need to pay for your appointment at the time and then claim the cost back from your insurer. Confirming the details with your provider in advance avoids any unexpected costs.

No referral is needed. You can book an appointment with Minal directly as a private patient, without seeing your GP first. If you’re using health insurance, however, some providers do require a GP or consultant referral before they’ll cover treatment – so if you’re claiming on insurance, check your policy’s requirements with your insurer before booking.

For private (self-funded) patients, Minal’s fees are:

  • Initial appointment – £85 (60 minutes)
  • Follow-up appointment – £65 (30 minutes)

Your first appointment is longer to allow time for a detailed assessment, diagnosis and an initial treatment plan, with follow-up sessions focused on your ongoing rehabilitation.

If you’re using private health insurance, the appointment length and structure may differ depending on your provider’s terms, so please check the cover with your insurer before booking (see “What insurances does Minal accept?” above).

Booking is easy and can be done in whichever way suits you best:
