Shoulder Problems We Commonly Treat

Rotator cuff tears

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilise and move the shoulder, and tears can result from injury or gradual wear with age, causing pain, weakness and difficulty with overhead movements. Many tears are managed very effectively with physiotherapy to restore strength and function. Minal will assess yours and advise whether a surgical opinion is appropriate.

Rotator cuff tendinopathy is irritation or wear of the cuff tendons and one of the most common causes of shoulder pain, often felt with overhead activity or when lying on the shoulder. It responds well to a progressive strengthening programme, which is the mainstay of recovery, alongside hands-on treatment to settle symptoms. Minal will tailor this to your shoulder and your goals.

Impingement, now often called subacromial pain syndrome, causes pain as the arm is raised, when the tendons and bursa under the tip of the shoulder blade become irritated. It usually improves with a programme of exercises to restore movement and control, combined with treatment to ease the pain. Minal will identify the contributing factors and guide your recovery.

Frozen shoulder is a painful, stiffening condition in which the capsule around the shoulder becomes inflamed and tight, severely limiting movement, and it tends to pass through stages over many months. Physiotherapy helps manage pain and maintain or regain movement at each stage. Minal has extensive experience with frozen shoulder and will guide you through a programme suited to your stage of recovery.

Shoulder instability means the joint is too loose or moves more than it should, sometimes to the point of partial or full dislocation, often after an injury or in naturally flexible people. A targeted strengthening and control programme is central to restoring stability and confidence. Minal will tailor your rehabilitation, and where dislocations are recurrent she will advise whether a surgical opinion is needed.

The AC joint sits at the top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade, and it can be injured by a fall or knock, or worn through age and overhead activity, with pain typically felt at the top of the shoulder and when reaching across the body. Treatment restores movement and strength. Minal will advise if a more significant injury needs further assessment.

Osteoarthritis can affect the main shoulder joint or the AC joint, causing pain, stiffness and reduced movement, and is more common with age. While the arthritis itself cannot be reversed, physiotherapy can ease symptoms and maintain function through tailored exercise and hands-on treatment. Minal focuses on keeping your shoulder as comfortable and useful as possible.

The subacromial bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the shoulder, and when it becomes inflamed it can cause pain, particularly with overhead movements and at night, often alongside rotator cuff irritation. Treatment settles the inflammation and addresses the contributing factors. Minal will provide a programme to restore comfortable movement.

The biceps tendon attaches at the front of the shoulder and can become irritated or torn, causing pain at the front of the shoulder that may extend down the arm, and it often occurs alongside rotator cuff problems. Physiotherapy to settle the tendon and restore strength is usually effective. Minal will assess whether any further investigation is warranted.

Calcific tendinitis is the build-up of calcium deposits within a shoulder tendon, which can cause sudden and severe pain as well as restricted movement. Episodes often settle over time, and physiotherapy helps manage pain and restore movement and strength. Minal will guide your recovery and advise on referral if the pain is severe or not settling.

The labrum is a rim of cartilage that deepens the shoulder socket, and it can be torn by injury or repetitive overhead activity, sometimes causing pain, clicking or a feeling of instability. Many labral problems are managed well with a structured rehabilitation programme. Minal will assess your shoulder and advise whether imaging or a specialist opinion would be helpful.

After a shoulder fracture, such as a broken upper arm or collarbone, the joint and surrounding muscles are often stiff and weak once healing is underway. Physiotherapy restores movement, strength and function and supports a confident return to normal use. Minal provides structured post-fracture rehabilitation, carefully matched to your injury and stage of recovery.

Recovery after shoulder surgery, such as a rotator cuff repair, stabilisation or shoulder replacement, depends heavily on well-timed, structured rehabilitation. With her specialist background and close working relationships with local shoulder surgeons, Minal provides the graded programmes these operations require. She will follow your surgeon’s protocol to give you the best possible outcome.

The shoulder blade provides a stable base for the arm to move on, and when its muscles are weak or poorly coordinated it can contribute to shoulder pain and impingement. Retraining the control and strength of the shoulder blade is often a key part of recovery. Minal will assess how your shoulder blade moves and include this in your programme where relevant.

Pain felt around the shoulder sometimes originates from the neck, where irritated joints or nerves can refer symptoms into the shoulder and arm, and telling the difference matters because it changes the treatment. Minal will assess both the neck and the shoulder to identify the true source and direct treatment accordingly.

Throwing, racquet, swimming and overhead sports place high demands on the shoulder and can lead to cuff, labral and instability problems. Treatment focuses on restoring strength, control and movement specific to your sport. Minal will guide a graded return to activity to help you get back to performing while reducing the risk of recurrence.

Many shoulder problems are worse at night, disturbing sleep when you lie on the affected side, which is common with rotator cuff and bursitis problems. While it can be wearing, it usually improves as the underlying problem is treated. Minal will address the cause and offer practical advice on positioning to help you sleep more comfortably.

A stiff shoulder, whether after injury, surgery or a period of reduced use, can limit reaching, dressing and everyday tasks. Hands-on treatment combined with a graded exercise programme is highly effective at restoring movement and confidence. Minal will guide you back to full activity at a pace that suits your shoulder.
