Neck Problems We Commonly Treat

Non-specific neck pain

This is the most common kind of neck pain, where the discomfort comes from the muscles, joints and ligaments of the neck rather than a single identifiable cause. It often shows up as an ache, stiffness or a sharp catch when turning the head, and can flare after poor sleep, stress or long periods at a screen. Most episodes settle, and hands-on treatment alongside gentle movement and tailored exercises can help you recover more comfortably and reduce the chance of it returning.

Sometimes the neck seizes up suddenly, often overnight or after an awkward movement, leaving it stiff, painful and locked to one side. Although it can be alarming, this kind of acute episode is rarely a sign of anything serious and usually eases within a week or two. Gentle osteopathic treatment, reassurance and simple advice on movement can help calm the spasm and restore comfortable motion sooner.

When neck pain lasts longer than around twelve weeks it is described as persistent or chronic. Pain that lingers is often influenced by more than one factor, including posture, workload, general fitness, stress and sleep. Rebecca takes time to understand the whole picture and combines manual treatment with a graded exercise and self-management plan to help you regain comfort and confidence.

Long hours looking down at phones, tablets and screens place sustained load on the neck, leading to aching, tightness and fatigue across the neck and upper shoulders. While posture is only part of the story, staying in one position for too long does take its toll. Treatment eases the build-up of tension, and Rebecca can advise on movement breaks, screen set-up and exercises that keep you comfortable through the day.

A bulging or herniated disc in the neck happens when the soft centre of a disc presses against its outer layer, sometimes irritating a nearby nerve and causing pain that can spread into the shoulder or arm. Despite how it sounds, the large majority of disc problems settle without surgery. Osteopathic care aims to reduce irritation, improve how the neck moves and build the strength and confidence to return to normal activity.

Cervical spondylosis is the general term for age-related wear affecting the neck’s joints and discs, a normal part of getting older that many people have without any symptoms. When it does cause stiffness or aching, gentle osteopathic treatment and regular movement can ease discomfort and help maintain flexibility. The aim is to keep you doing the things you enjoy with as little restriction as possible.

A trapped or pinched nerve in the neck, known as cervical radiculopathy, can cause pain, pins and needles, numbness or weakness that travels into the shoulder, arm or hand. Most cases improve over time with the right care, which focuses on easing the irritation, restoring movement and guiding you through suitable exercises. If you notice progressive weakness, or numbness that is spreading or affecting both arms, seek prompt medical assessment.

Cervicogenic headaches start in the neck and are felt in the head, often as a steady ache spreading from the base of the skull towards the forehead or behind the eye, usually on one side. They are commonly linked to stiff neck joints and tense muscles. Hands-on treatment to free up the neck, together with posture advice and exercises, can reduce both the headaches and the neck symptoms that drive them.

Tension-type headaches often go hand in hand with neck and shoulder tightness, producing a dull, pressing pain across the forehead or around the head. Stress, poor sleep and long periods of sitting can all contribute. Osteopathic treatment to ease muscle tension and improve neck movement, alongside simple self-care advice, can help reduce how often they occur.

Some people experience dizziness or unsteadiness that appears to come from the neck, often alongside stiffness and headaches, known as cervicogenic dizziness. It is important to rule out other causes first, so Rebecca will assess carefully and refer you on if needed. Where the neck is involved, gentle treatment and tailored exercises can help improve balance and comfort.

Neck and shoulder pain frequently occur together, as the muscles and joints of the neck, upper back and shoulders all work closely as one unit. Tension in one area often feeds into another, creating aching, stiffness and knots across the upper body. Treatment addresses the whole region rather than a single spot, easing tension and restoring smoother, freer movement.

A strained or overworked neck muscle can follow an awkward movement, unaccustomed activity or simply holding a position too long, leaving the area sore, tight and prone to spasm. These strains usually settle well, and treatment helps by easing tension, improving circulation and restoring comfortable movement. Simple advice on activity and recovery can reduce the chance of it happening again.

The facet joints are small joints at the back of the spine that guide and limit neck movement. When they become irritated they can cause localised neck pain that is often worse when looking up or turning the head, and may refer into the shoulder. Treatment to restore smooth movement in these joints, combined with supportive exercises, can settle the pain and improve how your neck feels day to day.

A stiff neck with limited movement can make everyday tasks such as driving or checking blind spots difficult and frustrating. Stiffness often builds from a mix of joint restriction, muscle tension and guarded movement after pain. Hands-on treatment to free up the joints, combined with mobility exercises, helps restore range and ease the tightness.

Waking with a sore, stiff neck is common and often relates to sleeping position, an unsupportive pillow or tension carried overnight. While usually short-lived, it can keep recurring if the underlying pattern is not addressed. Rebecca can ease the immediate symptoms and offer practical advice on pillows, positions and habits to help you sleep more comfortably.

Long hours at a desk, behind the wheel or in front of a screen are among the most common triggers for ongoing neck pain, leaving the neck and upper shoulders stiff and aching. Sustained positions and limited movement are usually the main culprits. Treatment eases the tension, and Rebecca can advise on workstation set-up, movement breaks and exercises that keep you comfortable through the working day.

Stress has a real, physical effect on the body, and many of us hold tension in the neck and shoulders without realising, leading to tightness, aching and headaches. Easing this tension with hands-on treatment can bring welcome relief, and Rebecca can suggest simple ways to manage the build-up day to day. Where stress is a significant factor, she can also point you towards further support.
