Jaw and TMJ Problems We Commonly Help With

TMJ disorder (TMD)

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear, and TMJ disorder, also called TMD, is the term for problems affecting these joints and the muscles around them. It can cause jaw pain, clicking, headaches and difficulty opening the mouth. The good news is that most cases respond well to conservative care that eases the muscles and improves how the jaw moves.

Jaw pain can be felt in the joint itself, in the surrounding muscles, or spreading into the face, ear or neck, and it often relates to muscle tension, clenching or how the jaw and neck move together. Osteopathic treatment can help ease the tension and restore comfortable movement. Rebecca will look at the whole picture, including the neck and posture, to find what is driving your symptoms.

Clicking, popping or grinding noises when you open or close your mouth are common and often harmless, usually relating to how the disc inside the joint moves. When they come with pain, locking or restriction, they are worth assessing. Treatment to settle the surrounding muscles and improve jaw movement can reduce the symptoms, and Rebecca will advise if anything further is needed.

Sometimes the jaw can catch or lock, either stuck open or unable to open fully, which can be alarming and uncomfortable, and usually relates to the disc within the joint and the muscles around it. Gentle treatment and tailored exercises can help restore movement and reduce how often it happens. Persistent or recurrent locking should be assessed, and Rebecca will refer you on if needed.

Grinding or clenching the teeth, often during sleep or at times of stress, places repeated strain on the jaw muscles and joints, leading to pain, tightness and headaches. Osteopathic treatment can ease the muscle tension and discomfort this causes. Because grinding can also affect the teeth, this often works best alongside your dentist, who may provide a night guard, and Rebecca will suggest a dental referral where appropriate.

Pain or fatigue when chewing, biting or talking is a common feature of jaw problems and usually relates to the joint and the muscles that work it, which can make eating tiring and uncomfortable. Treatment to release the jaw muscles and improve movement can ease this. Rebecca will also offer practical advice on resting and using the jaw while it settles.

Difficulty opening the mouth fully, or a feeling of tightness and restriction, can result from muscle tension, joint problems or guarding after pain, and it can interfere with eating, dental care and everyday life. Gentle hands-on treatment and specific exercises can help restore range and ease the tightness, and Rebecca will tailor these to you.

Tension in the jaw muscles, often from clenching or grinding, can trigger or contribute to headaches, typically felt around the temples, forehead or sides of the head. These often improve when the underlying jaw and muscle tension is addressed. Rebecca treats the jaw, head and neck together and offers advice to help reduce how often the headaches occur.

Jaw problems can cause aching or pain across the face, cheeks and temples, as the muscles that move the jaw are large and spread widely, and this is often linked to tension, clenching or joint irritation. Treatment to ease these muscles can bring relief. Rebecca will assess carefully and refer you on if another cause needs ruling out.

Because the jaw joints sit just in front of the ears, jaw problems can produce ear symptoms such as pain, a feeling of fullness or ringing, even when the ears themselves are healthy. Where these relate to the jaw and surrounding muscles, treatment can help. It is important to rule out ear conditions first, so Rebecca will advise seeing your GP if an infection or other cause seems likely.

The jaw and neck work closely together, and problems in one often affect the other, so jaw pain frequently comes alongside neck tension and stiffness. Treating the two areas together usually gives the best results. Rebecca will assess both the jaw and the neck, easing muscle tension and improving movement across the whole region.

Many people hold stress in the jaw, clenching or tensing the muscles without realising, which leads to pain, tightness and fatigue. Easing this tension with hands-on treatment can bring welcome relief. Rebecca can also suggest simple ways to release the jaw through the day, and where stress is a significant factor she can point you towards further support.

Keeping the mouth open for a long time during dental work can leave the jaw sore, tight and uncomfortable for a few days, and occasionally longer. Gentle treatment to ease the muscles and restore movement can help settle this. If symptoms persist, Rebecca will liaise with or refer you back to your dentist as needed.

Waking with a sore, stiff or tired jaw is common and often points to grinding or clenching during sleep, leaving the muscles fatigued and the joint stiff first thing. Treatment eases the muscle tension, and Rebecca can advise on managing night-time clenching, often alongside your dentist where a guard would help.

How you hold your head and neck affects the jaw, and sustained forward-head posture from screens and desk work can increase strain on the jaw muscles and joints, so addressing posture is often part of settling jaw symptoms. Rebecca combines treatment with practical advice on posture, screen set-up and movement to help reduce the load on your jaw.

A whiplash injury to the neck can also affect the jaw, as the sudden movement and the close link between the neck and jaw can leave both areas painful and tense, and treating them together usually helps. Rebecca will assess both regions and, where the injury followed a significant accident, ensure anything serious has been ruled out first.

Some people notice dizziness or a feeling of being off balance alongside jaw and neck tension. While there are many possible causes of dizziness, where the neck and jaw are involved gentle treatment may help. It is important to rule out other causes first, so Rebecca will assess carefully and refer you on if needed.

Jaw and TMJ problems can come and go, particularly if contributing factors such as clenching, stress, posture or an unaddressed neck issue remain. Lasting improvement usually comes from settling the current symptoms and tackling what is driving them. Rebecca focuses on both, and works alongside your dentist or GP where a combined approach gives the best result.
