Back Pain Problems We Commonly Treat

Non-specific lower back pain

This is the most common type of back pain, where the discomfort comes from the muscles, joints and ligaments of the lower back rather than a single identifiable cause. It can feel like an ache, stiffness or a sharp catch, and often flares after lifting, twisting or long periods of sitting. Most episodes settle, and hands-on treatment alongside gentle movement and tailored exercises can help you recover more comfortably and reduce the chance of it returning.

Sometimes the back seizes up suddenly after an awkward movement, leaving you stuck, sore and guarding against any motion. While it can be alarming, this kind of acute episode is rarely a sign of serious damage and usually eases within a few weeks. Gentle osteopathic treatment, reassurance and advice on staying as active as comfortable can help calm the pain and get you moving again sooner.

When back pain lasts longer than around twelve weeks it is described as persistent or chronic. Pain that lingers is often influenced by more than one factor, including how the back moves, general fitness, stress and sleep. Rebecca takes time to understand the whole picture and combines manual treatment with a graded exercise and self-management plan, which current guidance recognises as the most effective approach.

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back down through the buttock and leg, sometimes with pins and needles or numbness, caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. Most cases improve over time with the right care, which focuses on easing the irritation, restoring movement and guiding you through exercises that settle the nerve. If you ever notice numbness around the saddle area, difficulty passing urine or weakness in both legs, seek urgent medical help straight away.

A slipped or herniated disc happens when the soft centre of a spinal disc pushes against its outer layer, sometimes pressing on a nearby nerve. Despite the name, the disc does not actually slip out of place, and the large majority of disc problems settle without surgery. Osteopathic care aims to reduce pain and irritation, improve how the spine moves and build the strength and confidence to return to normal activity.

Discs naturally lose some height and water content with age, and this normal process is often labelled degenerative disc disease even though it is not really a disease. For some people it causes stiffness and aching, particularly in the morning or after sitting. Hands-on treatment and targeted exercise can keep the spine mobile and comfortable, helping you stay active despite these everyday changes.

Spondylosis is the general term for age-related wear affecting the spine’s joints and discs, a normal part of getting older that many people have without any symptoms. When it does cause stiffness or pain, gentle osteopathic treatment and regular movement can ease discomfort and help maintain flexibility. The aim is to keep you doing the things you enjoy with as little restriction as possible.

The facet joints are small joints at the back of the spine that guide and limit movement. When they become irritated they can cause localised back pain that is often worse when bending backwards or after staying in one position. Treatment to restore smooth movement in these joints, combined with exercises to support them, can settle the pain and improve how your back feels day to day.

The sacroiliac joints sit where the spine meets the pelvis and transfer load between your upper body and legs. Irritation here can cause pain low down on one side of the back or in the buttock, sometimes after pregnancy, a fall or repetitive strain. Osteopathic treatment focuses on balancing movement and load through the pelvis, alongside exercises to support and stabilise the area.

A pulled or strained muscle in the back can follow a sudden lift, twist or unaccustomed activity, leaving the area sore, tight and prone to spasm. These strains usually heal well, and treatment helps by easing tension, improving circulation and restoring comfortable movement. Simple advice on activity and recovery can also reduce the chance of it happening again.

Long hours at a desk, driving or repetitive tasks can leave the back stiff and aching, often across the lower back or between the shoulder blades. While posture is only part of the story, sustained positions and limited movement do take their toll. Treatment eases the build-up of tension, and Rebecca can advise on movement breaks, workstation set-up and exercises that keep you comfortable through the working day.

Back and pelvic pain are common during and after pregnancy as the body adapts and the ligaments soften. Gentle, carefully adapted osteopathic treatment can help relieve discomfort and improve how you move through this time. Rebecca tailors care to each stage and can suggest safe, supportive exercises for the back and pelvis.

Pain between the shoulder blades or across the mid back often relates to the joints and muscles of the thoracic spine and rib cage, and is frequently linked to posture and prolonged sitting. It can feel like a deep ache, tightness or a catch when breathing in. Hands-on treatment to free up these joints, together with mobility and strengthening exercises, usually brings good relief.

Neck pain often goes hand in hand with back and postural problems, and whiplash can follow a road accident or a sudden jolt to the neck. Symptoms can include stiffness, headaches and difficulty turning the head. Osteopathic treatment helps restore movement and ease muscle tension, while graded exercises support a steady return to normal activity.

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the space around the spinal nerves, more common with age, which can cause back pain along with heaviness, aching or cramping in the legs that tends to ease when sitting or leaning forwards. While the narrowing itself cannot be reversed by hand, treatment and the right exercise programme can improve comfort, mobility and walking tolerance. Rebecca will assess your symptoms and advise if onward referral is appropriate.

Spondylolisthesis is where one vertebra slips slightly forward on the one below, which can cause lower back pain and sometimes leg symptoms. Many people manage well with the right care. Treatment focuses on supporting the spine through targeted strengthening and improving movement, with hands-on techniques to ease discomfort, and referral arranged if further investigation is needed.

A smaller number of back problems are driven by inflammation rather than mechanical strain, with features such as marked early-morning stiffness, pain that improves with movement and a gradual onset in younger adults. Recognising this pattern matters, because it may need assessment from a rheumatologist. Rebecca is trained to spot these signs and will refer you appropriately while helping you stay mobile and comfortable.

As we get older the spine naturally changes, and back pain can become more common alongside reduced flexibility and confidence in moving. Gentle, carefully adapted osteopathic treatment and a suitable exercise plan can make a real difference to comfort, balance and staying independent. Care is always matched to your general health and what feels right for you.
